The department was recently awarded a Ph.D. Fellowship Program in Interdisciplinary Graduate Education in Materials Engineering through the Department of Education's Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) initiative.The program is designed to encourage some of the best students from the United States to pursue their Ph.D. degrees, and it offers them a multi-faceted approach that provides hands-on research, community outreach and management experience. Each student can receive up to $49,213 a year for up to three years based on financial need, which includes tuition and fees. When the GAANN scholarship is finished, Missouri S&T is still committed to supporting the students until the completion of their degrees. Financial assistance to cover educational expenses including the cost of textbooks and other materials, computer hardware and software, travel to professional meetings and seminars, membership in professional organizations, involvement in research and training, and involvement with professional research grant-writing is also included.
Ph.D. students interested in applying for an Interdisciplinary GAANN (Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need) fellowship in Materials Engineering at Missouri S&T should first apply for admission into graduate school. See the Missouri S&T web site at http://futurestudents.mst.edu/admissions/graduate/index.html. The formal graduate school application requests transcripts, GRE scores and personal data.
To apply for a GAANN Fellowship, send a letter of application to Dr. Wayne Huebner at the address provided (below). Include the following information in the GAANN Fellowship letter of application or as attachments:
- Summary of your most important qualifications for a GAANN Fellowship such as undergraduate GPA, GRE scores and any work experience.
- Outline of desired Ph.D. coursework at Missouri S&T in materials, ceramic, or metallurgical engineering.
- Statement of research interest.
- 1-2 page personal statement outlining short- and long-term professional goals, your plans to meet those goals and how this GAANN Fellowship program will facilitate those goals.
- 1-2 page resume.
- Evidence that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA, at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/) was made to determine financial need.
