The materials science and engineering department is comprised of the university’s metallurgical and ceramic engineering programs, two of the oldest and most nationally recognized programs on campus.

A strong core of full-time and research faculty carry out these programs, emphasizing experiential learning in state-of-the-art research laboratories over traditional classroom lectures.

MSE faculty have been repeatedly recognized for teaching and research excellence:

  • Four faculty members are Curators’ Professors, the highest professional rank in the University of Missouri system.
  • In 2006, four faculty members received outstanding teaching awards and six received faculty excellence awards.
  • In 2004, Delbert Day, Curators’ Professor Emeritus of ceramic engineering, was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, the first S&T faculty member to ever receive this prestigious recognition.
