Almost every major engineering achievement has been made possible by advancements in materials.New materials make it possible for jets to fly faster, for cell phones to become smaller, for diseased tissues to be replaced, or for automobiles to obtain better performance. From the research of nanomaterials and the development of fiber optics and electronic ceramics, to the extraction and design of metals, material scientists and engineers are affecting human prosperity and improving the quality of life.

Missouri S&T has two outstanding undergraduate programs in the materials science and engineering department -- ceramic engineering and metallurgical engineering. As a student in these programs, you will use the fundamentals of chemistry and physics to solve problems relating to the structure, properties, processing, and performance of materials. In the course of developing new materials and processes for various applications, you will work with:

Ceramics
Biomaterials
Composites
Metals
Electronic Materials
Optical Materials
Glasses
Polymers

Career opportunities for MSE graduates include development, production and application in diverse areas such as automotive, aerospace, biomedical, electronics, energy, glass, medical, nuclear, optical, and infrastructure. Our students become production engineers in foundries, and glass plants, management trainees in fortune 500 technology companies, research engineers for high tech businesses, and graduate students in the most competitive materials programs in the United States.
